Algoma University's 20th Annual Powwow: A Celebration of Indigenous Culture (2026)

Get ready for an extraordinary cultural celebration! Algoma University's 20th Annual Gathering at the Rapids Powwow is here, and it's going to be epic!

This weekend, on February 14th and 15th, the GFL Memorial Gardens will come alive with the vibrant traditions of the Anishinaabe people. But here's where it gets controversial... this powwow isn't just a showcase; it's a competitive arena for drumming, singing, and dancing, with artisans and craftsmen displaying their talents and unique creations.

The event, organized by Algoma University's Makwa Waakaa'igan, Anishinaabe Initiatives Division (AID), and Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students' Association, promises to be the largest in the Algoma region.

And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the competition. The powwow is an opportunity to immerse yourself in Indigenous culture, to learn about the enduring traditions and vibrant heritage of the Anishinaabe.

You can expect Grand Entries on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and on Sunday at 12 p.m. There will be a bustling marketplace where you can browse and purchase unique crafts and artwork.

Algoma University extends a warm invitation to the entire community, encouraging everyone to join in this celebration of life-long learning and cultural appreciation.

Admission is a bargain, with $5 per day or $10 for the entire weekend. But here's a twist: admission is free for children under 5, Elders over 60, and Algoma University students with a valid ID. And get this - you can also gain free entry by donating just two non-perishable food items to support the Algoma University Students' Union Food Pantry.

For those unable to attend in person, the powwow will be live-streamed on YouTube, starting at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, February 14th.

So, will you be joining this vibrant celebration? Remember, it's not just about the competition; it's about embracing and supporting Indigenous culture.

Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments! Are you excited for the powwow? What aspect of the event are you most looking forward to?
