Bulk-billing rates remain stagnant despite substantial Medicare investments, prompting concerns about patient access to healthcare.
Newly released Medicare data reveals that bulk-billing rates have flatlined at 77.6%, unchanged from a year ago, despite significant funding allocated to the scheme. This stagnation coincides with a 10,000-visit daily decline in GP services and an increase in out-of-pocket costs for patients, reaching $50.49 on average.
Shadow Health Minister Anne Ruston highlights the potential impact on the hospital system, suggesting that patients are avoiding doctor visits due to financial constraints. She emphasizes the need for affordable and timely access to GPs, expressing concern about the ongoing trend of patients forgoing medical care.
Health Minister Mark Butler, however, remains optimistic, anticipating a surge in bulk-billing rates with the introduction of the government's new Bulk Billing Incentive. Over 1,000 mixed billing clinics have pledged to switch to fully bulk-billed practices, joining the 1,600 GP practices already offering bulk-billing services. This initiative is expected to boost bulk-billing rates to over 2,600 practices nationwide.
