A fire broke out aboard a cargo truck at Budumburam in the Central Region on Saturday evening and was successfully contained by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), with no injuries reported.
GNFS received a distress call around 8:16 p.m. reporting that a cargo truck bearing the registration number GS 2379-23 had ignited. Although Budumburam Fire Station’s engine was temporarily out of service, firefighters, led by Station Officer II Takyi, acted quickly. They used portable extinguishers to curb the flames while awaiting additional support.
Reinforcements from Kasoa Fire Station arrived to assist, and the blaze was fully extinguished by about 10:29 p.m.
Initial investigations suggest the truck was carrying hazardous materials, including firecrackers, in violation of the Explosives (Importation) Instrument, E.I. 21 of 1999. Fire officials hypothesize that improper storage of the dangerous cargo could have caused spontaneous ignition.
The vehicle sustained mainly smoke damage but was otherwise salvageable. The incident has been reported to the Police for further inquiry.
