Hong Kongers can now book virtual visits with prisoners in an expanding trial scheme, offering a unique and innovative way to connect with loved ones behind bars. The Correctional Services Department has launched a groundbreaking initiative, allowing family and friends to schedule online video visits through a platform that will soon cover more remote correctional facilities.
The trial scheme, introduced on Wednesday, covers four correctional facilities on Lantau Island, providing a convenient and accessible way for visitors to connect with inmates. The department's social media post highlights the ease of booking video visits through the online platform, which has expanded to six locations across different districts.
This new measure aims to revolutionize the visitation experience by leveraging technology. It offers visitors more choices, greater convenience, and a more people-oriented approach. The four facilities included in the trial are Shek Pik Prison, Tong Fuk Correctional Institution, Sha Tsui Correctional Institution, and Lai Chi Rehabilitation Centre.
The department plans to expand the video visit electronic booking service to correctional facilities in other areas, providing residents in need with additional options for future visits. Visitors interested in making a reservation must register an account on the 'iAM Smart+' platform or the General Visit e-Services Platform to access the e-booking function.
This innovative approach to visitation has the potential to transform the way people connect with prisoners, offering a more accessible and efficient method for maintaining relationships while also ensuring the safety and security of both visitors and inmates.
