An engineer, Sam Wright, who once designed yellow box junctions, is now on a mission to help drivers fight unfair fines. He believes that local councils are overzealous in issuing penalties, as these junctions are lucrative money-makers. With the UK facing a cost-of-living crisis, receiving a penalty letter can be terrifying. Wright himself received a fine and had bailiffs at his door due to a postal mix-up, a scary experience that motivated him to take action.
Wright's social media posts about unfair fines went viral, and he now helps 10 people a day with their appeals. He argues that the yellow boxes are often larger than necessary, making it difficult for drivers to navigate without stopping. This has led to situations where drivers are fined for stopping to let pedestrians cross at a zebra crossing, or for being blocked by other vehicles changing lanes.
Wright's study with RAC found that 98 out of 100 yellow box junctions were bigger than needed, and he calls for the government to intervene. He highlights the absurdity of the situation, saying, "It's a choice between running someone over and getting fined." The engineer's crusade has gained traction, with nearly 80,000 followers on TikTok, but the government has rejected his petition to change the process.
The issue has sparked online discourse, with many calling for a reversal or change in the law. Wright points out that those issuing tickets often don't understand the law themselves, and the government is trying to distance itself from the problem. He challenged Kingston Council, where the most lucrative yellow box junction in Britain is located, bringing in over £450,000 in eight months. The council initially refused to act, admitting it was a 'cash cow', but later agreed to review all junctions in the borough.
The controversy deepens as RAC reports that drivers in 10 councils were fined nearly £1 million in one year, and The Times reveals that 39 councils received £21.5 million in fines in 2024. Many drivers pay these fines without realizing they may not be at fault. Wright has helped hundreds of people fight unfair penalties, winning 80% of appeals. But the question remains: are these fines a fair way to manage traffic, or a revenue-generating scheme?
