Imagine a world where every word you type is monitored, every app is controlled, and even your phone's hardware is a mirror of someone else's design. Try typing "Namhan" (the South Korean name), and it's automatically changed to imply a "puppet state." And this is the part most people miss... Even slang used by South Koreans is replaced with government-approved vocabulary. Take the casual word "oppa," which could refer to an older brother or boyfriend. On these phones, it's corrected to "comrade," with a stern warning that it should only be used for siblings.
No Access to the Global Internet
Both the Han 701 and the Sam Taesung 8 are designed to block all global connectivity. The Han 701 displays a Wi-Fi icon, but it's just for show. The newer Sam Taesung doesn't even bother with the pretense, removing the Wi-Fi toggle entirely. The only network option available is Mirae, a state-controlled intranet that requires government authorization and an authenticated North Korean SIM card.
This intranet is a tightly controlled space, filled with state-approved news, apps, and propaganda. And here's the kicker: even the speeds are deliberately slow, ensuring that digital activity remains limited and under constant surveillance.
A Highly Controlled App Ecosystem
Despite the large number of preloaded apps, installing new ones is a complex and restrictive process. Users must physically visit a store to authorize each downloaded app, and many of these apps have an expiration date, forcing users to pay subscription fees to keep using them. Even essential apps like legal guides are subject to this model.
