Invasive Meningococcal Disease in Europe: 2023 Update | IMD Epidemiology (2026)

The battle against invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in Europe is a critical public health concern. In 2023, a total of 1,895 confirmed cases and 200 deaths were reported across 30 EU/EEA countries, with France, Germany, and Spain bearing the brunt of this burden, accounting for 57% of all cases.

The notification rate of IMD reached an alarming 0.4 cases per 100,000 people in 2023, marking the highest rate since 2020. This trend is particularly concerning, as it affects vulnerable age groups: infants under one year old, followed by 1-4-year-olds and 15-24-year-olds.

But here's where it gets controversial: serogroup B, responsible for 57% of cases with known serogroup, remains the major culprit. It dominates across all age groups under 65, and its notification rate has been on the rise since 2021. Serogroup Y takes the second spot, especially prevalent in those 65 and older, while serogroup W comes in third.

So, what can be done? Strengthening surveillance of IMD and regularly evaluating the impact of immunisation programs are essential steps. This data-driven approach will empower decision-makers to implement or adapt vaccination strategies throughout life, ensuring a comprehensive and effective immunisation course.

And this is the part most people miss: the importance of lifelong immunisation. It's not just about children; adults need protection too. With serogroup B on the rise, the question arises: are current vaccination strategies sufficient?

What do you think? Should we be doing more to combat IMD, especially with serogroup B's increasing prevalence? Share your thoughts in the comments; let's spark a conversation and find solutions together.
