Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is on a mission to elevate Malaysia's global standing and has turned to South Africa for support. In a bold move, Anwar has requested South Africa's backing for Malaysia's bid to join several prestigious international organizations.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Anwar aims high, targeting the United Nations big leagues. He seeks South Africa's endorsement for Malaysia's nomination to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). And that's not all; Malaysia also has its eyes on the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) and the powerful United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
During a recent visit to South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, Anwar made his intentions clear. He stated, "I have sought South Africa's support for Malaysia's nomination to these influential bodies."
Anwar emphasized Malaysia's commitment to fostering strong ties with South Africa, based on solidarity, trust, and a shared development agenda that benefits both nations' people.
The IMO, ECOSOC, and ITU are key players in their respective fields, with the IMO overseeing shipping safety, ECOSOC coordinating economic and social work, and ITU leading in information and communication technologies. Meanwhile, the HRC and UNSC are integral to global governance, with the UNSC holding primary responsibility for international peace and security.
Anwar's visit to Johannesburg is part of a four-day working trip, which began on November 20, 2025. He was invited as a guest of the South African President to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit, showcasing Malaysia's leadership as the ASEAN Chair for 2025.
So, will South Africa lend its support to Malaysia's ambitious bid? And what impact could this have on the global stage? These are questions that remain to be answered.
