Michael J. Fox Recounts the Impact of His Height on Melora Hardin's Role in 'Back to the Future'
The iconic film 'Back to the Future' had a few changes in its cast, particularly in the romantic lead. Michael J. Fox, who played the time-traveling teen Marty McFly, revealed in his memoir that his height played a significant role in the casting process, inadvertently affecting another actress's opportunity.
Fox, who was initially cast opposite Eric Stoltz, found himself in a unique situation when it came to his height. He wrote, 'My height, which was a source of ridicule during my childhood, became a challenge when I had to play a romantic lead. As a teenager, my height worked in my favor, but as an adult, it became a hurdle when I went up for roles opposite taller actresses.'
This led to a surprising consequence for Melora Hardin, who had been cast as Marty's girlfriend, Jennifer. Hardin, being several inches taller than Fox, was replaced in the movie after Fox took over the role. According to Fox, 'Bob Zemeckis, the director, initially thought the audience might not mind the height difference. However, when he surveyed the crew, the female members confirmed that tall, pretty girls in high school rarely choose the cute, short guy.'
Fox expressed his regret and concern, stating, 'I regret that this prejudice inadvertently affected Melora Hardin. She was a talented actress, and I would have risen to her defense. No one asked for my opinion, but I believe her talent deserved a chance to shine.'
The role of Jennifer eventually went to Claudia Wells in the first installment, and Elisabeth Shue took over in the sequels, 'Back to the Future Part II' and 'Part III'. Fox's insight into the casting process highlights the challenges of navigating height differences and their impact on the film industry.
