New Contagious Flu Strain Alert: What You Need to Know About the H3N2 Mutation (2026)

A new and highly contagious strain of the flu is currently on the rise across the nation, prompting health officials to express concerns that the effectiveness of the vaccine may be compromised.

This particular variant is a more transmissible mutation of the influenza A(H3N2) virus, which has been the dominant form of the flu since September, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has indicated that this season's flu vaccination might have reduced efficacy but is still likely to lower the risk of severe outcomes such as hospitalization and death.

Since late September, a staggering 89% of the flu viruses sampled by the CDC have been identified as the mutated subclade K strain. While North Texas has not experienced severe outbreaks as of yet, experts like Dr. David Winter from Baylor Scott & White Health warn that it’s only a matter of time before the mutation impacts residents in the Lone Star State. "Currently, states like New York, New Jersey, and Louisiana, as well as Colorado, are facing the brunt of the outbreak," he noted. "But it's only a matter of time before this spreads throughout the country, and we will inevitably see a surge in cases here too."

According to CDC estimates, there have already been approximately 2.9 million cases of flu, with around 30,000 hospitalizations and 1,200 fatalities reported this season as of December 6.

Flu season typically spans from October to May in the United States, with peak activity occurring between December and February when cases are most frequently reported. Drawing from flu trends observed in other countries such as Great Britain and Australia, Dr. Winter anticipates that this year could be particularly challenging for the U.S. regarding influenza. "Last year's flu season was quite severe, and based on international experiences, we might be facing an even harsher season this time around," he cautioned, emphasizing the importance of not underestimating the situation.

The CDC strongly advises that everyone aged six months and older receive their annual flu vaccine to help mitigate the spread and impact of the virus.

To further protect yourself from contracting the flu, the CDC recommends the following precautions:

  • Maintain distance from individuals who are ill.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Ensure good air quality in your environment.
  • Practice good hygiene habits.

For those who decide against getting vaccinated and later contract the flu, Dr. Winter underscores the importance of seeking medical treatment to prevent severe illness. "While vaccination is the most effective way to avoid the flu, if you miss out on that, getting an early diagnosis is crucial so we can provide antiviral medications to help keep you out of the hospital."
