This is the story of the Yunnan Lancang Bird-watching Festival, where a record-breaking 273 bird species were spotted, including seven never-before-seen in the area! On November 1st, 45 intrepid bird-watchers, equipped with raincoats, cameras, and binoculars, ventured into the Lancang Lahu autonomous county in Yunnan, Southwest China. Divided into 12 teams, their mission was to identify as many bird species as possible within a 60-hour window. This marked the second edition of the festival, held in the city of Pu’er, and the results were nothing short of remarkable.
After nearly three days of exploration, the teams emerged with an astonishing tally: 273 bird species, including the elusive spotwinged starling, a species previously undocumented in the region. This event is part of the “Our Yunnan” project, launched in 2023 to address gaps in wildlife data, strengthen conservation efforts, and promote sustainable forest management that benefits both local communities and biodiversity.

The festival is a collaborative effort involving government bodies, NGOs, and corporate sponsors, all working together to conduct rigorous field surveys. Lu Wen, director of the Nuozhadu Provincial Nature Reserve in Pu’er, highlighted the festival's impact: “The first Lancang bird race in 2023 added 47 new species to our checklist, and this year’s event has further expanded our knowledge.”
Lei Jinyu, from the Rosefinch Center, emphasized the efficiency of bird races: “In less than three days, we documented over half of Pu’er’s known bird species and a significant portion of those in the Nuozhadu reserve. This proves that bird races are an incredibly effective method for rapid bird surveys.”
Since its inception in 2022, the “Our Lancang” project, supported by the Lancang county government, Huatai Futures Co, and the Huatai Foundation, has focused on biodiversity monitoring. Pang Tao, project coordinator from the Shan Shui Conservation Center, explained that the initiative aims to fill data gaps and provide scientific guidance for conservation. The project also explores sustainable forest management practices, paving the way for ecotourism while benefiting local communities.
To gather data, the project has installed 23 infrared cameras across Lancang. However, Pang Tao noted, “These cameras primarily monitor wild animals and large bird species. To fully understand the area’s avian diversity, bird surveys like the festival are indispensable. The success of the first festival inspired us to integrate bird races into our project areas.”
