Tim Wellens Wins Clásica Jaén 2026: Epic Solo Gravel Attack | Cycling Highlights (2026)

Tim Wellens pulled off a stunning long-range solo victory at the Clásica Jaén, dominating the Spanish gravel roads and securing his 42nd career win!

But here's where it gets fascinating: Wellens, riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, didn't just win; he commanded the race, breaking away a remarkable 54 kilometers from the finish line. This wasn't a last-minute surge, but a strategic masterclass that left his rivals scrambling.

How the Drama Unfolded

The fifth edition of the Clásica Jaén, held in the picturesque hills and gravel paths around Ubeda in Andalucía, presented a challenging 154-kilometer route. While slightly shorter than the previous year, the terrain promised plenty of excitement.

From the outset, the pace was blistering, preventing any traditional early breakaways from forming. Instead, the race was a constant flurry of attacks. Around 100 kilometers to go, Quinten Hermans (Pinarello-Q36.5) and Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) managed a brief escape, but their efforts were short-lived, quickly absorbed by the peloton as it approached the first gravel section at Vandelvira, approximately 80 kilometers from the finish.

The Race-Defining Move

It was on the uphill approach to the Vandelvira gravel that the race truly ignited. A powerful group of 12 riders surged ahead, including prominent names like Hermans, Arrieta, Van Gils, Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates-XRG). However, this elite selection only lasted about 10 kilometers before being reeled in. Soon after, an even larger contingent of 30 riders managed to break free just before Vandelvira. This formidable front group boasted significant firepower, including four teammates of eventual winner Wellens, alongside riders like Hermans, Bilbao, Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), and Iván Romeo (Movistar).

Wellens' Solo Masterpiece

With 64 kilometers remaining, Tim Wellens spotted his moment. He launched a decisive attack, taking Mark Donovan (Pinarello-Q36.5) with him. The crucial Mar de Olivos gravel sector, encountered with 55 kilometers to go, saw Donovan momentarily drop Wellens. But the Belgian's resilience shone through; he swiftly bridged the gap and immediately countered with an attack of his own. Behind them, the chase intensified as more riders, including the highly anticipated Tom Pidcock, managed to join the pursuit.

The Battle for Second

Pinarello-Q36.5 worked diligently to support their leader in the chase, but Wellens was building an impressive lead, stretching it to 1 minute and 30 seconds with 40 kilometers left.

The race took another dramatic turn with 30 kilometers to go on the demanding Santa Eulalia gravel sector, featuring a steep 500-meter stretch at a 9% gradient. This section fractured the chase group, with Pidcock and Hermans leading a smaller contingent that included Christen and Gianni Vermeersch (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe). However, Wellens' teammates played a crucial role, strategically blocking and slowing any concerted attacks from the chasers, effectively acting as a shield for their leader.

UAE Team Emirates-XRG's tactics proved masterful, helping Wellens conserve his energy and manage his advantage. Even with 16 kilometers remaining, a near-misfortune on one of the final gravel sectors couldn't derail his solo effort.

The Final Push

Despite persistent efforts from Pinarello-Q36.5 and multiple attacks from Pidcock, it was Gianni Vermeersch who launched the decisive move with just 9 kilometers to go, finally breaking apart the chase group. Pidcock and Van Gils managed to break free from Vermeersch, with Christen also in tow, as the trio closed in on Wellens.

However, the 34-year-old Belgian had timed his effort to perfection. He crossed the finish line in Ubeda with a triumphant smile, celebrating his first victory of the season. The chase group, despite their valiant efforts, couldn't quite bridge the gap.

And this is the part most people miss: While Wellens' solo effort was undeniably brilliant, the strategic blocking by his UAE teammates was equally critical. Could other teams have countered this tactical advantage more effectively?
