Family Day Long Weekend Forecast for Toronto: A Break from the Bitter Cold
The special weather statement for Toronto has ended, and the city is in for a welcome change after a particularly frigid start to the week. While a system brought brief periods of heavy snow on Friday evening, the snow has now ceased. However, Environment Canada warns of a risk of freezing drizzle overnight, so residents should remain vigilant.
Friday morning saw wind chill values approaching -20, and the city reached a high of -1 C. This bitter start to the day is a stark contrast to the mild temperatures expected over the upcoming Family Day long weekend.
Torontonians can look forward to above-seasonal temperatures on all three days of the weekend. On Saturday, the daytime high will rise to 2 C, about three degrees warmer than normal for this time of year. Sunday and Monday will bring sunshine and highs of 4 C and 5 C, respectively, providing a much-needed break from the recent cold snap.
The cold snap, which began in January and extended into February, was one of the longest in over a decade. It brought a 23-day stretch of temperatures below freezing, with some days seeing wind chill values over -30. The warmer conditions will continue into next week, with a high of 5 C forecast for Tuesday and the daytime high hovering around the freezing mark on Wednesday and Thursday.
CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter predicts that next Friday will bring more active weather, with the potential for another snowstorm. So, while the immediate cold snap has ended, Torontonians should still prepare for the possibility of more wintry conditions in the near future.
