A thrilling sprint finish kicked off the Tour of Oman, with Colombian rider Sebastián Molano claiming victory on stage 1. This win marks the seventh triumph for UAE Team Emirates-XRG this season, an impressive start to the month of February.
In a dramatic sprint, Molano outpaced Fernando Gaviria of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA and Gerben Thijssen of Alpecin-Premier Tech. Despite Alpecin-Premier Tech's impressive lead-out, it was Molano's superior speed that secured the win.
"I'm overjoyed! My team did an incredible job, keeping me sheltered from the wind and in a prime position. Rui Oliveira's support in the closing kilometers was exceptional," Molano enthused.
This victory holds special significance for Molano, who had to cut his 2023 season short due to knee issues. After five months away from racing and two months without cycling at all, this win is a sweet comeback.
The stage, set on wide, straight roads, was mostly incident-free, except for a brief moment when two animals darted across the road.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The early breakaway, consisting of José Luis Faura, Patryk Goszczurny, and Alex Díaz, built a substantial lead. However, with 40km to go, their advantage was halved, and the peloton closed in. The final 25km saw the leaders attacking each other, but it was clear their efforts were futile as the peloton organized a chase.
With the stage set for a sprint finish, Alpecin-Premier Tech took the lead into the final kilometer, but it was Molano's well-timed acceleration that secured the win.
Molano and Gaviria lead the General Classification (GC), but Goszczurny sits in third due to bonus seconds earned during his breakaway. With hilly stages ahead on Sunday, the GC is set to undergo another transformation on stage 2.
And this is the part most people miss...
The race unfolded on a challenging course, starting at the Ministry of Tourism and immediately tackling the steep 3km climb of Jabal Road. Within 6km, a breakaway formed, with Faura and Goszczurny taking the lead. They were soon joined by Díaz, and together, they built a substantial advantage.
